Anyhow, as it happens, I am a little modified in the head– so well played, Facebook algorithms. From the age of about 13 onwards, I’ve experienced higher-than-seems-normal levels of stress and anxiety, and while I’ve mostly come to terms with being jittery and a bit doomy, I definitely wouldn’t mind being less so. I have actually had counselling before, and it does assist. But could e-counselling not just re-hinge my mind, however do so without me having to put pants on and leave the house?

And pulling back from my own (relatively subtle) concerns for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the mental health problems escalating among under-30s? With cuts to psychological health services truly starting to bite, digitised treatment could be simply the ticket for young people who currently filter nearly every element of their lives– friends, work, sex, entertainment– through a screen.

Not everyone is completely encouraged that moving mental health care online is the way forward. “You get to know not only what it’s like to talk to the individual, but how it feels to be in a space with them.

” I have actually performed some research study into Skype counselling,” says London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘functional equivalent’ of traditional counselling; it’s simply not quite the exact same thing. It’s actually important that people who take part in it understand that it’s a various experience from remaining in the space with someone, speaking in person.”

” In terms of availability, it’s a great start and definitely better than nothing. It’ll hopefully lead them to ultimately revealing up in the space.

In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some patients towards online programmes rather than face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that worries Dr Balick.

” My fear is that it’s occurring a growing number of for economic reasons, instead of since it’s what’s best for people. That’s not great if it’s rolled out simply to conserve money and there aren’t critical questions being asked about these services. Then, I’m always very sceptical of people who are either really extremely professional or really really versus online psychological health care. It’s a case of asking the best questions.”

Well, if the future of mental healthcare is all about IMs, FaceTime and ‘OMG, which neuroses R U?’ tests, I decided I ‘d learn what that brave new world would be like. I registered for four extremely different online mental health services– ranging in cost from totally free to , 100 a month– and ran my stress and anxieties through them all, concurrently, for a week. Here’s what I discovered.

Does BetterHelp use licensed therapists? Talk Space Q2

What I’m doing here is reviewing my experience of utilizing each mental health service, rather than its effectiveness – since even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘cure’ you in just one week. Okay, cool – let’s psychological health!

How does it work?

As seen on FB (by me, anyhow), United States business is the corporate leviathan of the e-counselling game. They claim to have 500 licensed counsellors working for them, each with a minimum of 3 years of experience.

After filling in a survey to ascertain what specific flavour of mental you are, you’re coupled with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly switch for a different one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then kick off an instant messaged treatment session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, go on and on until one of you eventually passed away.

What does it cost?

You get a free seven-day trial – similar to a free Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, except with way more concerns about what your childhood was like. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for unrestricted message-based counselling and one ‘complimentary’ phone session with your counsellor per month. Yeah, I do not get how it’s complimentary either, but whatever.
