From the age of about 13 onwards, I have actually suffered from higher-than-seems-normal levels of stress and anxiety, and while I have actually mainly come to terms with being jittery and a bit doomy, I definitely would not mind being less so. I’ve had counselling before, and it does assist.

And pulling back from my own (reasonably subtle) issues for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the mental health concerns escalating amongst under-30s? With cuts to psychological health services truly starting to bite, digitised treatment could be just the ticket for young adults who currently filter almost every aspect of their lives– buddies, work, sex, home entertainment– through a screen.

Not everyone is completely convinced that moving psychological health care online is the method forward. “For me, what works in treatment is when you meet someone in person, in the very same room,” states London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You are familiar with not just what it’s like to talk with the person, but how it feels to be in a room with them. Utilizing Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘sufficient’, but it does not create the nearness, the intimacy, that truly gets people to open up and explore things.”

” I’ve carried out some research into Skype counselling,” states London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘practical equivalent’ of conventional counselling; it’s simply not quite the very same thing. It’s really important that people who take part in it know that it’s a different experience from being in the room with someone, speaking face-to-face.”

” In terms of ease of access, it’s a great start and certainly better than absolutely nothing. It’ll hopefully lead them to eventually showing up in the space.

In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some patients towards online programs rather than in person counselling, a phenomenon that worries Dr Balick.

” My worry is that it’s happening more and more for financial reasons, instead of because it’s what’s best for people. If it’s presented just to save money and there aren’t critical concerns being inquired about these services, that’s bad. However then, I’m constantly really sceptical of individuals who are either really very pro or extremely extremely versus online mental health care. It’s a case of asking the ideal concerns.”

I signed up for four extremely different online psychological health services– ranging in cost from free to , 100 a month– and ran my anxieties through them all, concurrently, for a week. Here’s what I discovered.

Does BetterHelp use licensed therapists? Betterhelp Terms

What I’m doing here is evaluating my experience of using each mental health service, rather than its effectiveness – since even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘cure’ you in simply one week. Okay, cool – let’s psychological health!

How does it work?

As seen on FB (by me, anyhow), US business is the business leviathan of the e-counselling game. They claim to have 500 licensed counsellors working for them, each with at least three years of experience.

After completing a survey to determine what specific flavour of psychological you are, you’re coupled with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly swap for a different one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then start an instantaneous messaged treatment session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, go on and on till among you eventually died.

What does it cost?

You get a totally free seven-day trial – much like a totally free Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, other than with method more concerns about what your youth was like. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for unlimited message-based counselling and one ‘complimentary’ phone session with your counsellor per month. Yeah, I do not get how it’s complimentary either, but whatever.
