From the age of about 13 onwards, I’ve suffered from higher-than-seems-normal levels of anxiety, and while I’ve primarily come to terms with being jittery and a bit doomy, I definitely would not mind being less so. I have actually had counselling prior to, and it does assist.

And drawing back from my own (fairly subtle) concerns for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the psychological health problems intensifying amongst under-30s? With cuts to mental health services truly starting to bite, digitised treatment could be simply the ticket for young people who already filter almost every element of their lives– friends, work, sex, home entertainment– through a screen.

Not everybody is entirely persuaded that moving psychological healthcare online is the method forward. “For me, what works in treatment is when you satisfy someone in person, in the very same room,” says London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You get to know not only what it resembles to talk with the individual, but how it feels to be in a room with them. Using Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘good enough’, but it does not produce the closeness, the intimacy, that actually gets individuals to open up and explore things.”

” I’ve carried out some research into Skype counselling,” states London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘functional equivalent’ of traditional counselling; it’s simply not quite the exact same thing. It’s actually crucial that people who engage in it understand that it’s a different experience from remaining in the room with someone, speaking face-to-face.”

” In terms of ease of access, it’s an excellent start and certainly better than nothing. It’ll ideally lead them to ultimately appearing in the room. If you’re struggling with relationship issues, accessory problems, or much deeper problems, it’s better to be in the room with someone. Skype and the web uses a distance from your counsellor that may not be helpful.”

In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some clients towards online programs instead of in person counselling, a phenomenon that worries Dr Balick.

” My worry is that it’s occurring a growing number of for financial factors, instead of since it’s what’s finest for individuals. That’s not excellent if it’s rolled out simply to conserve cash and there aren’t crucial questions being asked about these services. But then, I’m always very sceptical of people who are either very extremely professional or very really against online mental healthcare. It’s a case of asking the ideal questions.”

I signed up for four very different online mental health services– ranging in cost from free to , 100 a month– and ran my anxieties through them all, all at once, for a week. Here’s what I discovered.

What I’m doing here is examining my experience of using each mental health service, rather than its effectiveness – because even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘treat’ you in simply one week. Okay, cool – let’s mental health!

How does it work?

As seen on FB (by me, anyway), United States business is the business leviathan of the e-counselling video game. They declare to have 500 licensed counsellors working for them, each with a minimum of three years of experience.

After filling in a survey to ascertain what particular flavour of psychological you are, you’re paired with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly switch for a different one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then start an instant messaged therapy session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, continue till among you eventually died.

What does it cost?

You get a free seven-day trial – much like a free Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, other than with way more concerns about what your youth was like. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for unrestricted message-based counselling and one ‘free’ phone session with your counsellor per month. Yeah, I don’t get how it’s free either, but whatever.
