Anyhow, as it takes place, I am slightly tweaked in the head– so well played, Facebook algorithms. From the age of about 13 onwards, I’ve experienced higher-than-seems-normal levels of stress and anxiety, and while I’ve mostly come to terms with being tense and a bit doomy, I definitely wouldn’t mind being less so. I’ve had counselling prior to, and it does help. But could e-counselling not only re-hinge my mind, however do so without me needing to put pants on and leave your home?
And pulling back from my own (fairly subtle) issues for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the psychological health problems escalating amongst under-30s? With cuts to mental health services really starting to bite, digitised treatment could be just the ticket for young people who currently filter nearly every element of their lives– pals, work, sex, entertainment– through a screen.
Not everyone is completely encouraged that moving psychological health care online is the way forward. “You get to know not just what it’s like to talk to the individual, but how it feels to be in a space with them.
” I’ve performed some research into Skype counselling,” states London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘practical equivalent’ of traditional counselling; it’s simply not quite the very same thing. It’s truly essential that people who take part in it are aware that it’s a various experience from remaining in the space with somebody, speaking in person.”

” In terms of ease of access, it’s a good start and certainly much better than nothing. It’ll hopefully lead them to eventually revealing up in the room.
In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some clients towards online programmes instead of face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that worries Dr Balick.
” My worry is that it’s taking place increasingly more for economic reasons, instead of because it’s what’s finest for people. That’s not good if it’s rolled out simply to save money and there aren’t important questions being asked about these services. Then, I’m constantly very sceptical of individuals who are either very extremely pro or extremely extremely against online psychological health care. It’s a case of asking the ideal questions.”
I signed up for 4 very different online psychological health services– ranging in expense from totally free to , 100 a month– and ran my anxieties through them all, all at once, for a week. Here’s what I found.
Does BetterHelp use licensed therapists? Betterhelp Online Support Group
What I’m doing here is evaluating my experience of using each psychological health service, rather than its efficiency – since even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘cure’ you in just one week. I’m just comparing each service to the experience of sitting in a room and blarting on about yourself to a therapist. If you’re with me, nod. Okay, cool – let’s mental health!

How does it work?
As seen on FB (by me, anyhow), US business is the corporate leviathan of the e-counselling game. They claim to have 500 licensed counsellors working for them, each with at least three years of experience.
After filling out a survey to establish what specific flavour of mental you are, you’re paired with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly switch for a various one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then start an instant messaged treatment session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, go on and on up until one of you eventually died.
What does it cost?
You get a totally free seven-day trial – similar to a free Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, except with method more questions about what your childhood was like. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for limitless message-based counselling and one ‘totally free’ phone session with your counsellor monthly. Yeah, I do not get how it’s free either, however whatever.
