From the age of about 13 onwards, I’ve suffered from higher-than-seems-normal levels of stress and anxiety, and while I have actually mostly come to terms with being jittery and a bit doomy, I certainly wouldn’t mind being less so. I’ve had counselling prior to, and it does help.

And pulling back from my own (reasonably low-key) problems for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the mental health concerns intensifying amongst under-30s? With cuts to mental health services really starting to bite, digitised therapy could be just the ticket for young people who already filter almost every element of their lives– buddies, work, sex, home entertainment– through a screen.

Not everybody is totally encouraged that moving mental healthcare online is the way forward. “For me, what works in treatment is when you satisfy someone in person, in the same space,” says London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You are familiar with not just what it’s like to talk to the individual, but how it feels to be in a space with them. Using Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘good enough’, but it does not develop the closeness, the intimacy, that truly gets individuals to open up and check out things.”

” I’ve performed some research study into Skype counselling,” states London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘practical equivalent’ of conventional counselling; it’s just not quite the same thing. It’s actually essential that individuals who engage in it know that it’s a different experience from remaining in the space with someone, speaking face-to-face.”

” In terms of availability, it’s a great start and absolutely better than absolutely nothing. It’ll hopefully lead them to ultimately revealing up in the space.

In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some patients towards online programmes rather than face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.

” My worry is that it’s taking place a growing number of for economic factors, instead of due to the fact that it’s what’s best for people. That’s not great if it’s rolled out just to save money and there aren’t critical questions being asked about these services. But then, I’m always extremely sceptical of individuals who are either extremely very professional or really really versus online psychological healthcare. It’s a case of asking the best questions.”

I signed up for four very different online psychological health services– varying in cost from totally free to , 100 a month– and ran my stress and anxieties through them all, all at once, for a week. Here’s what I found.

What I’m doing here is evaluating my experience of using each psychological health service, rather than its efficiency – since even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘treat’ you in simply one week. I’m merely comparing each service to the experience of being in a space and blarting on about yourself to a therapist. Nod if you’re with me. Okay, cool – let’s mental health!

How does it work?

As seen on FB (by me, anyhow), United States company is the business leviathan of the e-counselling video game. They claim to have 500 certified counsellors working for them, each with at least three years of experience.

After filling out a survey to ascertain what particular flavour of mental you are, you’re coupled with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly swap for a different one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then begin an immediate messaged treatment session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, continue until among you eventually died.

What does it cost?

You get a free seven-day trial – just like a totally free Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, other than with method more concerns about what your youth resembled. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for limitless message-based counselling and one ‘complimentary’ phone session with your counsellor monthly. Yeah, I don’t get how it’s totally free either, but whatever.
