Anyhow, as it takes place, I am a little tweaked in the head– so well played, Facebook algorithms. From the age of about 13 onwards, I’ve struggled with higher-than-seems-normal levels of stress and anxiety, and while I’ve mainly come to terms with being tense and a bit doomy, I certainly would not mind being less so. I’ve had counselling prior to, and it does assist. Could e-counselling not just re-hinge my mind, but do so without me having to put pants on and leave the home?

And drawing back from my own (reasonably low-key) problems for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the mental health problems intensifying among under-30s? With cuts to mental health services actually beginning to bite, digitised therapy could be just the ticket for young adults who already filter almost every element of their lives– good friends, work, sex, entertainment– through a screen.

Not everyone is entirely persuaded that shifting psychological healthcare online is the way forward. “For me, what works in therapy is when you meet somebody face-to-face, in the exact same space,” states London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You get to know not only what it resembles to speak with the person, however how it feels to be in a space with them. Using Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘good enough’, but it doesn’t create the closeness, the intimacy, that truly gets individuals to open up and check out things.”

” I have actually performed some research into Skype counselling,” says London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘practical equivalent’ of conventional counselling; it’s just not quite the same thing. It’s actually important that people who take part in it understand that it’s a different experience from being in the space with someone, speaking face-to-face.”

” In regards to availability, it’s an excellent start and absolutely better than nothing. It’ll ideally lead them to ultimately showing up in the space. However, if you’re struggling with relationship problems, accessory concerns, or much deeper problems, it’s better to be in the room with somebody. Skype and the internet offers a range from your counsellor that might not be valuable.”

In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some clients towards online programmes rather than in person counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.

” My fear is that it’s happening more and more for economic factors, rather than due to the fact that it’s what’s best for people. That’s not great if it’s rolled out just to conserve money and there aren’t vital concerns being asked about these services. However then, I’m constantly really sceptical of individuals who are either extremely extremely pro or extremely very versus online psychological health care. It’s a case of asking the best concerns.”

I signed up for four very different online mental health services– varying in cost from totally free to , 100 a month– and ran my anxieties through them all, at the same time, for a week. Here’s what I found.

Does BetterHelp use licensed therapists? Betterhelp Goals

What I’m doing here is examining my experience of using each mental health service, instead of its effectiveness – since even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘cure’ you in simply one week. I’m just comparing each service to the experience of being in a room and blarting on about yourself to a therapist. Nod if you’re with me. Okay, cool – let’s psychological health!

How does it work?

As seen on FB (by me, anyhow), US company is the corporate behemoth of the e-counselling game. They declare to have 500 licensed counsellors working for them, each with at least three years of experience.

After completing a questionnaire to ascertain what particular flavour of psychological you are, you’re coupled with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly swap for a different one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then kick off an instant messaged treatment session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, continue up until among you ultimately died.

What does it cost?

You get a totally free seven-day trial – just like a free Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, other than with method more concerns about what your childhood resembled. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for unlimited message-based counselling and one ‘complimentary’ phone session with your counsellor per month. Yeah, I don’t get how it’s totally free either, but whatever.
