Anyway, as it occurs, I am somewhat fine-tuned in the head– so well played, Facebook algorithms. From the age of about 13 onwards, I’ve suffered from higher-than-seems-normal levels of anxiety, and while I’ve primarily pertained to terms with being tense and a bit doomy, I certainly would not mind being less so. I have actually had counselling before, and it does assist. But could e-counselling not just re-hinge my mind, but do so without me needing to put trousers on and leave your home?

And pulling back from my own (reasonably low-key) concerns for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the psychological health problems escalating among under-30s? With cuts to mental health services truly starting to bite, digitised therapy could be just the ticket for young adults who currently filter almost every element of their lives– friends, work, sex, home entertainment– through a screen.

Not everyone is completely encouraged that shifting mental health care online is the way forward. “For me, what works in therapy is when you fulfill someone face-to-face, in the very same room,” states London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You get to know not only what it’s like to speak with the individual, but how it feels to be in a room with them. Utilizing Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘sufficient’, however it doesn’t create the nearness, the intimacy, that actually gets individuals to open and explore things.”

” I’ve carried out some research into Skype counselling,” says London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘functional equivalent’ of conventional counselling; it’s simply not quite the exact same thing. It’s really important that people who take part in it are aware that it’s a different experience from being in the room with someone, speaking face-to-face.”

” In terms of availability, it’s a good start and certainly better than nothing. It’ll ideally lead them to eventually appearing in the space. However, if you’re struggling with relationship problems, attachment problems, or deeper problems, it’s better to be in the space with somebody. Skype and the internet offers a distance from your counsellor that may not be practical.”

In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some patients towards online programs instead of face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that worries Dr Balick.

” My worry is that it’s occurring a growing number of for economic reasons, instead of since it’s what’s finest for individuals. That’s not great if it’s rolled out just to save money and there aren’t critical concerns being asked about these services. Then, I’m constantly really sceptical of individuals who are either very extremely pro or extremely extremely against online psychological health care. It’s a case of asking the ideal concerns.”

Well, if the future of mental health care is all about IMs, FaceTime and ‘OMG, which neuroses R U?’ quizzes, I decided I ‘d discover what that brave new world would resemble. I registered for four very different online mental health services– ranging in cost from totally free to , 100 a month– and ran my stress and anxieties through them all, all at once, for a week. Here’s what I found.

What I’m doing here is reviewing my experience of using each mental health service, rather than its efficiency – due to the fact that even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘cure’ you in simply one week. I’m simply comparing each service to the experience of being in a room and blarting on about yourself to a therapist. Nod if you’re with me. Okay, cool – let’s psychological health!

How does it work?

As seen on FB (by me, anyhow), United States company is the corporate leviathan of the e-counselling game. They claim to have 500 certified counsellors working for them, each with at least three years of experience.

After completing a questionnaire to establish what particular flavour of psychological you are, you’re coupled with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly swap for a different one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then start an instantaneous messaged therapy session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, go on and on till one of you ultimately died.

What does it cost?

You get a free seven-day trial – much like a totally free Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, other than with method more questions about what your childhood resembled. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for endless message-based counselling and one ‘free’ phone session with your counsellor each month. Yeah, I don’t get how it’s totally free either, but whatever.
