Anyhow, as it happens, I am somewhat modified in the head– so well played, Facebook algorithms. From the age of about 13 onwards, I’ve suffered from higher-than-seems-normal levels of stress and anxiety, and while I have actually mostly come to terms with being tense and a bit doomy, I certainly wouldn’t mind being less so. I’ve had counselling before, and it does assist. However could e-counselling not only re-hinge my mind, but do so without me needing to put pants on and leave your house?

And pulling back from my own (relatively low-key) issues for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the psychological health concerns intensifying among under-30s? With cuts to mental health services truly beginning to bite, digitised therapy could be simply the ticket for young adults who already filter almost every aspect of their lives– buddies, work, sex, home entertainment– through a screen.

Not everybody is entirely persuaded that shifting psychological health care online is the method forward. “You get to understand not just what it’s like to talk to the person, but how it feels to be in a space with them.

” I’ve performed some research into Skype counselling,” says London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘practical equivalent’ of traditional counselling; it’s just not quite the very same thing. It’s truly crucial that people who engage in it understand that it’s a various experience from being in the room with someone, speaking in person.”

” In terms of accessibility, it’s a good start and certainly better than nothing. It’ll hopefully lead them to ultimately appearing in the room. Nevertheless, if you’re dealing with relationship concerns, accessory issues, or deeper problems, it’s much better to be in the space with someone. Skype and the internet offers a distance from your counsellor that may not be valuable.”

In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some clients towards online programs rather than in person counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.

If it’s rolled out just to save money and there aren’t critical questions being asked about these services, that’s not great. Then, I’m always very sceptical of people who are either extremely very pro or really really versus online psychological health care.

I signed up for 4 really different online mental health services– varying in expense from free to , 100 a month– and ran my stress and anxieties through them all, all at once, for a week. Here’s what I found.

What I’m doing here is reviewing my experience of using each psychological health service, rather than its efficiency – because even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘treat’ you in just one week. Okay, cool – let’s psychological health!

As seen on FB (by me, anyhow), US business is the business leviathan of the e-counselling video game. They claim to have 500 licensed counsellors working for them, each with a minimum of three years of experience.

After completing a survey to ascertain what particular flavour of psychological you are, you’re coupled with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly swap for a various one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then begin an instant messaged therapy session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, go on and on until one of you eventually died.

What does it cost?

You get a complimentary seven-day trial – much like a free Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, except with method more questions about what your youth was like. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for unrestricted message-based counselling and one ‘totally free’ phone session with your counsellor monthly. Yeah, I do not get how it’s free either, however whatever.
