From the age of about 13 onwards, I have actually suffered from higher-than-seems-normal levels of anxiety, and while I’ve mostly come to terms with being tense and a bit doomy, I certainly wouldn’t mind being less so. I’ve had counselling before, and it does assist.
And drawing back from my own (reasonably low-key) issues for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the mental health concerns intensifying among under-30s? With cuts to psychological health services truly starting to bite, digitised therapy could be just the ticket for young adults who already filter almost every element of their lives– friends, work, sex, entertainment– through a screen.
Not everyone is completely convinced that moving psychological health care online is the method forward. “For me, what works in treatment is when you satisfy somebody in person, in the exact same space,” states London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You get to know not just what it resembles to talk with the individual, however how it feels to be in a space with them. Using Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘good enough’, but it doesn’t develop the closeness, the intimacy, that really gets individuals to open and explore things.”
” I’ve performed some research study into Skype counselling,” says London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘practical equivalent’ of standard counselling; it’s simply not quite the same thing. It’s truly essential that people who take part in it understand that it’s a different experience from being in the space with somebody, speaking face-to-face.”

” In terms of accessibility, it’s a good start and certainly better than absolutely nothing. It’ll hopefully lead them to ultimately showing up in the room.
In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some patients towards online programmes rather than in person counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.
