Anyway, as it occurs, I am a little tweaked in the head– so well played, Facebook algorithms. From the age of about 13 onwards, I have actually suffered from higher-than-seems-normal levels of stress and anxiety, and while I have actually primarily pertained to terms with being tense and a bit doomy, I certainly wouldn’t mind being less so. I’ve had counselling prior to, and it does assist. Could e-counselling not only re-hinge my mind, but do so without me having to put pants on and leave the home?

And pulling back from my own (reasonably subtle) issues for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the mental health issues escalating among under-30s? With cuts to psychological health services truly starting to bite, digitised treatment could be simply the ticket for young adults who already filter almost every element of their lives– friends, work, sex, home entertainment– through a screen.

Not everyone is totally encouraged that moving psychological healthcare online is the method forward. “For me, what works in therapy is when you fulfill somebody in person, in the same room,” says London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You learn more about not only what it’s like to talk with the individual, but how it feels to be in a room with them. Using Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘good enough’, but it does not develop the closeness, the intimacy, that really gets individuals to open up and explore things.”

” I’ve carried out some research study into Skype counselling,” states London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘practical equivalent’ of conventional counselling; it’s just not quite the same thing. It’s actually essential that people who take part in it know that it’s a various experience from being in the space with someone, speaking in person.”

” In terms of availability, it’s an excellent start and definitely better than nothing. It’ll ideally lead them to eventually appearing in the space. However, if you’re fighting with relationship problems, accessory concerns, or much deeper concerns, it’s much better to be in the room with somebody. Skype and the internet offers a distance from your counsellor that might not be helpful.”

In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some clients towards online programs rather than face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.

If it’s rolled out just to conserve cash and there aren’t crucial questions being asked about these services, that’s not excellent. Then, I’m always very sceptical of people who are either extremely very pro or really really against online psychological health care.

I signed up for four really various online mental health services– varying in expense from free to , 100 a month– and ran my stress and anxieties through them all, concurrently, for a week. Here’s what I found.

What I’m doing here is evaluating my experience of using each mental health service, instead of its efficiency – because even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘treat’ you in simply one week. I’m simply comparing each service to the experience of sitting in a room and blarting on about yourself to a therapist. Nod if you’re with me. Okay, cool – let’s psychological health!

How does it work?

As seen on FB (by me, anyway), US business is the corporate leviathan of the e-counselling game. They claim to have 500 certified counsellors working for them, each with a minimum of 3 years of experience.

After filling out a survey to determine what specific flavour of mental you are, you’re paired with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly swap for a different one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then kick off an instant messaged treatment session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, go on and on up until one of you eventually died.

What does it cost?

You get a complimentary seven-day trial – similar to a complimentary Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, except with way more questions about what your childhood was like. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for unrestricted message-based counselling and one ‘free’ phone session with your counsellor each month. Yeah, I do not get how it’s free either, however whatever.
