You can also schedule a video session with your therapist if you’re somebody who enjoys face-to-face conversation. Simply log on at your consultation time and your therapist will trigger you to begin the video chat.

From the age of about 13 onwards, I’ve suffered from higher-than-seems-normal levels of stress and anxiety, and while I have actually mainly come to terms with being jittery and a bit doomy, I certainly would not mind being less so. I’ve had counselling before, and it does help.

And drawing back from my own (reasonably low-key) issues for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the psychological health problems intensifying among under-30s? With cuts to psychological health services truly beginning to bite, digitised treatment could be simply the ticket for young people who already filter almost every aspect of their lives– friends, work, sex, home entertainment– through a screen.

Not everyone is totally convinced that shifting psychological health care online is the way forward. “For me, what operate in therapy is when you meet somebody in person, in the very same room,” states London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You get to know not just what it resembles to speak to the individual, however how it feels to be in a space with them. Using Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘sufficient’, however it does not create the closeness, the intimacy, that really gets people to open up and explore things.”

” I’ve performed some research study into Skype counselling,” says London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘practical equivalent’ of traditional counselling; it’s just not quite the exact same thing. It’s truly important that people who take part in it understand that it’s a different experience from remaining in the room with somebody, speaking in person.”

” In terms of ease of access, it’s a great start and definitely much better than nothing. It’ll hopefully lead them to ultimately showing up in the space.

In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some patients towards online programmes rather than face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.

” My worry is that it’s occurring increasingly more for economic reasons, rather than due to the fact that it’s what’s finest for individuals. If it’s rolled out simply to save money and there aren’t critical concerns being asked about these services, that’s bad. But then, I’m always very sceptical of individuals who are either extremely really professional or very very against online psychological health care. It’s a case of asking the right questions.”

Well, if the future of psychological healthcare is all about IMs, FaceTime and ‘OMG, which neuroses R U?’ tests, I decided I ‘d find out what that brave brand-new world would resemble. I signed up for four very different online mental health services– varying in cost from totally free to , 100 a month– and ran my stress and anxieties through them all, at the same time, for a week. Here’s what I found.

Does BetterHelp use licensed therapists? Apps Like Betterhelp

What I’m doing here is examining my experience of using each mental health service, instead of its efficiency – because even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘cure’ you in just one week. I’m just comparing each service to the experience of sitting in a room and blarting on about yourself to a therapist. If you’re with me, nod. Okay, cool – let’s psychological health!

How does it work?

As seen on FB (by me, anyway), US company is the corporate behemoth of the e-counselling video game. They claim to have 500 certified counsellors working for them, each with at least three years of experience.

After filling in a survey to establish what specific flavour of mental you are, you’re coupled with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly switch for a different one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then begin an immediate messaged therapy session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, continue up until one of you ultimately died.

What does it cost?

You get a totally free seven-day trial – much like a totally free Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, except with method more questions about what your youth resembled. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for limitless message-based counselling and one ‘totally free’ phone session with your counsellor monthly. Yeah, I don’t get how it’s free either, but whatever.
